13th International Currency Conference

A Currency Conference in Czech Republic (12—15 October 2008, Prague) — the largest international conference on cash circulation — became an extraordinary event because it was the first conference in an Eastern European country out of all 11 conferences since 1992. The Prague conference provoked a considerable interest of central and commercial banks, producers of banknotes and equipment, and technological developers, or in a nutshell, all members of the world currency industry.

On 15 November 2008 the national currency in the Republic of Kazakhstan, tenge, celebrates the 15th anniversary of circulation. During these fifteen years the Kazakh money changed their design, security features, and production materials. The only thing that remained intact is the public respect and trust. In 2006 a representative jury consisting of leading experts of the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) named the new series of Kazakh tenge the winner in the nomination «The best new banknote or banknote series». Russian banks having partners in Kazakhstan included tenge in the list of currencies they work with and serve their clients. What role did the introduction of national currency 15 years ago play in the development of the Republic of Kazakhstan?

Larry Felix is the Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing of the USA since 2006. He manages the development of the design and security complex of the NexGen banknote series. Mr. Felix was going to take part in the Second international conference «Cash Circulation: Models, Standards, Tendencies» but regrettably was not able to do so. Instead he sent his video presentation the script of which we offer to our readers.

The Second International Conference «Cash Circulation: Models, Standards, Tendencies» was held on 3—4 July, 2008 at the President Hotel, Moscow. The conference was organized by the Association of regional Russian Banks (Association Russia) and IPK InterCrim-press under the auspices of the Bank of Russia and Currency Research Ltd (USA). A total of over 250 delegates took part in the conference representing commercial banks of Russia and CIS, national banks of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus, the European Central Bank, Norges Bank, Bank of Uganda, Bulgarian National Bank, World Vending Association, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Europol.
